Europe Travel Budget Breakdown: How Much Does a Trip Really Cost?
A realistic Europe travel budget for 2026 — daily costs by country and travel style, with sample 7-day budgets for Paris, Rome and a backpacker route.
Most "Europe travel budget" articles online give you a single number that's either fantasy or fearmongering. The truth is that Europe spans a 4x cost range from cheapest (Albania, Bulgaria, Romania) to most expensive (Switzerland, Norway, Iceland), and your daily spend is driven far more by how you sleep, eat and move than by which country you're in. This is the framework I actually use when planning, with real 2026 numbers.
The three cost tiers
- Backpacker: €50–€80 / day — hostel dorms, supermarket lunches, one paid sight a day, regional trains and buses.
- Mid-range: €120–€200 / day — 3-star hotels or private hostel rooms, one bistro meal a day, most major sights, fast trains.
- Comfort: €280–€450 / day — boutique 4-star hotels, two restaurant meals, guided tours, taxis and first-class trains.
Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Denmark sit roughly 40–60% above these tiers. Eastern Europe (Poland, Czechia, Hungary, the Balkans) sits 30–40% below.
Cost breakdown by category
Accommodation
- Hostel dorm bed: €18–€45 (Lisbon €22, Paris €40, Zurich €70)
- Private hostel room: €55–€120
- 3-star central hotel: €90–€180 in most cities; €180–€280 in Paris, Amsterdam, Zurich
- Apartment (1-bed, central): €100–€220 / night, typically 20% cheaper than equivalent hotels for 4+ nights
Food
- Bakery breakfast: €3–€6
- Supermarket lunch (sandwich + fruit + drink): €5–€9
- Casual lunch (pasta, falafel, kebab, menu del día): €10–€16
- Mid-range bistro dinner with a glass of wine: €25–€40
- Fine dining: €70–€200+
The single biggest budget lever is eating one home-style meal a day from a supermarket or bakery. Doing this saves €15–€25 per person per day with no real loss of experience.
Transport
- Local metro/bus single ticket: €1.50–€3.50
- Day pass: €7–€12
- Intercity train (booked 4–8 weeks ahead): Paris–Lyon €35, Rome–Florence €25, Madrid–Seville €30
- Walk-up intercity train: 2–3x the early-bird price
- Budget intra-Europe flight: €30–€90 with carry-on only; €60–€140 with checked bag
See our Europe train travel guide for the booking-window cheat sheet.
Sights and activities
- Major museum: €15–€25 (Louvre €22, Vatican €20, Uffizi €25)
- Walking tour: free (tip €10–€15) or €20–€35 paid
- Day tour with transport: €60–€120
- Guided food tour: €70–€110
City passes (Paris Museum Pass, Roma Pass, Lisboa Card) only pay off if you plan 3+ paid sights per day — otherwise individual tickets are cheaper.
