The Best Time to Visit Europe (2026)
Europe is a continent, not a country, and the right answer to "when should I go" depends entirely on where you're going and what you want from the trip. Here's a month-by-month, region-by-region guide that actually helps you decide.

The short answer
For most travelers visiting most of Europe, September is the single best month — warm enough for swimming and outdoor meals, cool enough for comfortable walking, and 20–40% cheaper than August. Late April through June is a close second, especially for blooming gardens, longer days and a fresh-spring feel. The months to actively plan around: avoid August in the Mediterranean, avoid Christmas week unless you're specifically going for the markets, and avoid early November almost everywhere except wine regions.
Month by month
January
Cold and quiet across most of the continent. The cheapest month for flights and hotels (excluding ski regions). Best for: museum-focused trips to Paris, Rome, Madrid; ski holidays in the Alps and Dolomites; the January sales in fashion capitals; northern lights in Lapland and Iceland. Avoid: any beach destination, hiking in mountainous areas.
February
Still cold, still cheap. Best for: skiing peaks here, Venice Carnival (book a year ahead), Nice Carnival, mimosa and almond blossom on the Côte d'Azur, last days of Christmas-light atmosphere in northern cities. Mid-February school holidays (UK, France) push some prices up.
March
Shoulder of shoulder season. First warm-ish days appear in southern Europe by mid-month. Best for: early-season trips to Andalusia, Sicily, Lisbon, Madrid; northern lights still possible until mid-month; quiet visits to Italy's big-name cities. Easter sometimes lands in late March — prices spike in Christian-tradition countries.
April
Spring arrives properly. Best for: tulip season in the Netherlands (peaks mid-April), Andalusia's Semana Santa processions, gardens at Versailles and Villa d'Este, hiking in Greece and Portugal. Easter weekend is the year's biggest religious-tourism event in Spain, Italy and Greece — book 2+ months ahead.
May
One of the two best months. Long days, mild temperatures (15–24°C across most of Europe), things in bloom, crowds still manageable. Best for: literally everywhere except the Mediterranean coast for sea swimming. The Cannes Film Festival pushes Côte d'Azur prices up for two weeks mid-month.
June
The first peak month. Warm but not yet brutal, schools mostly still in session, daylight at its longest. Best for: the Mediterranean comes online for swimming, Norway and Iceland enter their best weather window, hiking everywhere is excellent, festival season begins (Glastonbury, Sónar, Roskilde). Prices climb sharply in the last week as European school holidays start.
July
Hot, crowded, expensive — and undeniably beautiful. The Mediterranean is at its best for beach holidays. Best for: Greek islands, Croatian coast, Italian seaside, Spanish costas, Lapland's white nights, Alpine hiking. Avoid: the big Mediterranean cities (Rome, Athens, Seville) where temperatures regularly hit 38°C and the cobblestones radiate heat until midnight.
August
The trickiest month. Locals leave Mediterranean cities for the coast or the countryside, which means many beloved restaurants close for "ferragosto" or "vacaciones." Tourist crowds peak. Prices peak. Heat peaks. Best for: Coastal escapes (Greek islands, Mallorca, Croatian coast, French Riviera if you booked early), Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Salzburg Festival. Avoid:urban sightseeing in Rome, Madrid, Athens, Paris.
September
The single best month for most travelers. The first 10 days are still beach weather across the Mediterranean; by month-end the air has cooled and the light has the famous golden-hour quality. Crowds drop noticeably after the first week as European schools restart. Prices fall 20–40%. Wine harvest season starts in France, Italy, Germany and Spain.
October
Underrated. Genuinely warm in the south through mid-month, peak fall foliage in northern and central Europe, and prices keep dropping. Best for: wine regions (Tuscany, Bordeaux, Rhine, Douro), Scotland's autumn colors, the last warm-water swims in Crete and Cyprus, Munich's Oktoberfest (which mostly happens in late September).
November
The hardest month — usually grey, cold and lacking festive distraction. The exception: the last week of November, when Christmas markets open across Germany, Austria, Czechia, Alsace and Switzerland. Best for: budget city breaks (low prices, low crowds), wine regions still in autumn glow, museum marathons, the start of Christmas market season.
December
Christmas markets in full swing through December 23. Then the continent essentially shuts down on Christmas Day before re-opening for New Year's Eve. Best for: Christmas markets (Vienna, Salzburg, Strasbourg, Colmar, Nuremberg, Dresden), early-season skiing, New Year's Eve in Berlin, Reykjavik or Edinburgh. Avoid: traveling on December 24–26 unless you're staying put with friends or family.
