Europe Train Travel: How to Book Cheap and Travel Smart

A practical guide to booking trains across Europe — when to use Interrail, when to book direct, the platforms to use, and the small habits that save hundreds.

Europe's train network is the best in the world for travelers — but the booking ecosystem is fragmented, prices fluctuate wildly, and the right tool depends on your trip shape. Here's the framework I use.

The 3-question framework

  1. How many cities will you hit?
  2. Are your dates fixed?
  3. Are you covering long distances or short ones?

When point-to-point beats Interrail

For most travelers — fewer than 5 cities, mostly fixed dates, mix of train and budget flight — booking each leg directly 1–2 months ahead is cheaper. A Paris–Amsterdam Thalys booked early is €35; the same train walk-up is €130.

When Interrail wins

If you're hopping cities every 1–3 days for two weeks or more, the Interrail Global Pass (around €330 for 7 days in 1 month) starts to win on flexibility and total cost.

The platforms

  • Trainline — best overall search across operators. Small booking fee.
  • Omio — compares trains, buses, flights side by side.
  • Direct national operators (SNCF, Trenitalia, DB, Renfe) — often the cheapest, no booking fee, but each has its own quirks.

The booking calendar

  • 3 months out — French TGV opens (best discounts here)
  • 2 months out — Italian Frecce, Spanish AVE
  • 6 weeks out — Eurostar, Thalys, ICE
  • 1 month out — most regional trains

Tips that save money

  • Travel mid-week (Tuesday–Thursday) — often half the weekend price
  • Off-peak times — early morning and late evening are cheaper
  • Look at split-ticketing (book A→B→C as two tickets instead of one through fare)
  • Night trains are back — Vienna–Berlin, Zurich–Amsterdam, Paris–Milan all have great overnight options that double as a hotel night
