Avoiding Common Tourist Scams in Europe

The most common tourist scams in Europe in 2026 — pickpockets, taxi tricks, gold-ring scams and more — and how to recognize them before they cost you.

Europe is overwhelmingly safe for travelers. Violent crime against tourists is rare; what you actually need to defend against is opportunistic theft and a small catalog of well-rehearsed scams. Here's the field guide.

Pickpocketing: the real risk

This is the only thing most travelers actually need to worry about. Hot zones: the Paris Métro line 1, Rome's bus 64 to the Vatican, Barcelona's Las Ramblas, the Sagrada Família surroundings, Prague's Charles Bridge. The fix is simple: cross-body bag worn in front, phone in a zipped pocket, never a wallet in a back pocket.

The classic scams

The "gold ring"

Someone bends down, "finds" a gold ring, asks if it's yours, then offers it to you for "luck" — and asks for money. Walk past without engaging.

The friendship bracelet

Common around Sacré-Cœur and the Eiffel Tower. Someone ties a string around your wrist as a "gift," then demands payment. If you let them touch you, you're already in. Hands in pockets, keep walking.

The petition

A young person with a clipboard asks you to sign a petition for a "deaf and mute charity." While you read, an accomplice picks your pocket. Just say no and keep moving.

The taxi runaround

Especially Rome and Athens airports. A driver claims your hotel is in a "restricted zone" and detours, or "the meter's broken" and quotes a flat €80 fare. Use Uber/Bolt/FreeNow, or pre-paid airport taxi stands inside the terminal.

The bar bait-and-switch

A "friendly local" or a glamorous stranger invites you for a drink at "their favorite bar." The bill arrives at €400. Pay only at bars you choose yourself.

ATM safety

Use ATMs attached to actual banks (HSBC, Santander, BNP Paribas) — never the standalone ones in tourist zones, which often skim cards and offer terrible exchange rates. Always decline "dynamic currency conversion" — it's a guaranteed bad deal.
