Why Antibes is special
Antibes is the rare French Riviera town that feels like a real place, not a postcard. Inside the 16th-century walls is a working old town — fishermen on the ramparts, the daily Provençal market at Marché Provençal, kids playing pétanque in the squares — wrapped around the largest yacht harbor in Europe and a string of sandy beaches. Picasso lived here in 1946 and the museum he gifted the city remains its quiet star.
How long to stay
- Half day: Old town walk + market + lunch. Doable from a Nice or Cannes day trip.
- 1 full day: Adds Picasso Museum, ramparts, beach hour and dinner.
- 2 days (recommended): Adds a Cap d'Antibes coastal walk, Plage de la Garoupe morning, and Juan-les-Pins evening.
- 3+ days: Use as a Riviera base — train day-trips to Nice, Eze, Monaco, Cannes, Saint-Paul-de-Vence.
Best time to visit
Late April to early June and September are the prime months: warm sea, mild evenings, lavender flowering inland, restaurants and beach clubs open but not packed. July and August are beautiful but crowded and pricey — hotel rates double or triple, and the Antibes Yacht Show (late September) plus Jazz à Juan (mid-July, neighboring Juan-les-Pins) create local spikes. October is still warm enough to swim and noticeably cheaper. November–March is quiet and very affordable; some seasonal restaurants close.
Where to stay
- Vieille Ville (old town): Best for atmosphere — markets, ramparts, dinners. €130–€220 off-season.
- Cap d'Antibes: Luxury, seclusion, sea views; need a car or taxi. €350–€2,000+/night.
- Juan-les-Pins: Sandy beaches, jazz festival, more nightlife but a Costa-del-Sol vibe. €120–€220.
- Near the train station: Cheaper, walkable to the old town in 8 minutes. €90–€150.
Best beaches
- Plage de la Salis: Long sandy beach with view of the old town. Free, family-friendly, with a couple of beach restaurants. The default pick.
- Plage de la Garoupe (Cap d'Antibes): Smaller, sheltered, clearer water — Hemingway's beach. 25-minute walk or 10 minutes by car/taxi.
- Plage de la Gravette: Tiny sandy cove inside the old port. Touristy but convenient.
- Cap d'Antibes coastal path (Sentier du Littoral): Free 5 km walk around the cap with hidden swim spots.
Eating in Antibes
- Marché Provençal: Daily covered market (closed Mondays) — get socca, pissaladière, olives, fresh fruit and a wedge of local cheese for a perfect lunch.
- Le Brulot: Old-town classic for grilled meats and Provençal classics; reserve.
- Lou Pais: Local Provençal cooking, set menus around €30, no tourist trap.
- Le P'tit Cageot: Bistronomic small plates, modern Provençal.
- Les Vieux Murs: Splurge dinner on the ramparts with sea view (book the terrace).
Budget breakdown
- Hotel (3-star, central): €110–€180/night off-season; €220–€380 in July/August.
- Casual lunch (market): €10–€15. Bistro lunch: €18–€25.
- Bistro dinner with wine: €40–€60. Splurge: €70–€100.
- Picasso Museum: €8.
- Train Nice ↔ Antibes: €5.20 each way.
Realistic total: €140–€220/day per person off-season, €230–€340 in peak summer.
Practical tips
- Trains run every 20–30 minutes along the coast — Nice (25 min), Cannes (12 min), Monaco (50 min), Menton (60 min). Buy at the platform machines.
- The Marché Provençal is closed Mondays. Mondays are antique-market only.
- Picasso Museum is closed Mondays and from 12:30–1:30 PM lunch.
- Parking in the old town is painful in summer. Park at La Poste or the port garage and walk in.
- Cap d'Antibes mansion-spotting: Politely. Most of the gates are private and security is not friendly.
